A key contributor to maternal mortality is limited availability of essential lifesaving maternal health (MH) commodities due to inadequate funding for their procurement. To address this challenge, the USAID Global Health Supply Chain Program-Procurement and Supply Management (GHSC-PSM) project, in partnership with the Ethiopian Ministry of Health (MOH) and the Ethiopian Pharmaceutical Supply Service (EPSS), has implemented several strategies.
This case study examines the changes over time in the funding landscape for MH commodities and explores the country’s effort to improve MH commodity availability and funding. It showcases the impactful collaboration and strategies that have led to improved MH commodity management, accessibility and funding. It serves as a useful reference for countries facing similar challenges to potentially glean insights from the work of the Ethiopian MOH and partners, including GHSC-PSM.
