The Pharmacie Populaire du Mali Adopts a New Roadmap for the Next Five Years

The Pharmacie Populaire du Mali (PPM)—which manages the country’s public health supply chain—closed the books on its former strategic plan at the close of 2020. After nearly a year of preparation, PPM validated its 2021 to 2025 strategic plan, which serves as a roadmap of objectives, vision, and goals, at a workshop in March 2021 that included many national and international partners, including the Ministry of Health, local hospitals, community health centers, district representatives, UNICEF, the World Bank, the Embassy of the Netherlands and several other USAID-funded projects.

During the two-day event, PPM reported on progress in renovating PPM sites in Bamako, presented the architectural plan for its general management site, and received feedback from five working groups on areas of improvement in the strategic plan. Following the workshop, the organizing committee reviewed the feedback and revised the 2021-2025 strategic plan, which the PPM Board of Directors officially adopted at the end of March 2021.

With support from the USAID Global Health Supply Chain-Procurement and Supply Management (GHSC-PSM) project, PPM carried out a multi-stage process to development and internally validate the new plan, chaired by a representative of the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs. Beginning in 2020, a technical working group led by the director of the PPM held weekly discussions to develop the new plan, including working with two local consultants to conduct an in-depth analysis and evaluation of the 2015-2019 strategic plan.

This assessment of the former plan showed positive results, a 65.2 percent success rate in achieving its objectives. Based on this evaluation, five sub-groups aligned with five key objectives for 2021-2025 met weekly to draft the new strategic plan, culminating with internal validation in February 2021.

The validation of the new strategic plan is an important milestone for PPM, which serves as a hub of excellence in the Malian health sector. This plan will continue to serve as PPM’s guiding document for the next five years in storing and distributing essential health commodities for the people of Mali.
